Letters to Myself: Entry Fifteen
Prompt: What habits or rituals bring the most comfort to you?
Lately I’ve been leaning into tiny, everyday rituals, simple practices that anchor me when life feels chaotic. This piece is about the habits that actually bring comfort and how you might try one today.
Answer to the prompt:
Lately, I’ve been learning how powerful small rituals can be. The things that feel simple or ordinary often turn out to be the very practices that keep me grounded. For me, those rituals are reading and writing every day. They take time and effort, but they’re worth it. Putting thoughts on paper, shaping words, and diving into stories. These things sharpen my mind and give me peace. I never thought I’d call myself an “avid reader,” but now I can, and it makes me proud.
Another ritual that’s become important is creating healthier boundaries with social media. I enjoy the funny videos, the creative inspiration, even the little sparks of joy when I find something new I want to try. But I also know how easy it is to fall into endless scrolling and constant conflict. Stepping away has helped me realize that not everything deserves my attention. Protecting my time and energy gives me space to focus on what’s right in front of me.
And that’s where the real comfort lives: in the present. In playing my guitar (even if I’m not great yet), in walking outside, in noticing the birds and squirrels, the sound of cars passing, or the feel of grass under my shoes. These are the moments that remind me life isn’t only about the big milestones. It’s about showing up for the small things that bring us peace.
I want to remind myself, and maybe anyone reading, that these rituals aren’t about perfection or overnight change. They’re about slow adjustments. One step at a time, one choice at a time. If social media is fueling your anxiety, try replacing a scroll with a short walk. If you’re stuck in stress, step outside and breathe the air, even just for a minute. Notice the atoms of the world around you.
These rituals are my proof that peace is possible, even in a chaotic world. They don’t erase the stress, but they give me tools to carry it better. And at the end of the day, they remind me of something I always come back to: if I can be just a little better than yesterday, or even better in the next hour, then I’m still moving forward.
