Letters to Myself: Entry Sixty-Three
Prompt: When has my heart known something before my mind caught up to it?
“Our heart always transcends us.”
A reflection based on the idea of listening to your heart; to making sure we are not getting caught up with something that is too good or too bad; that our intuition has a say in the course of action we follow in this life, but not always the final answer.
Sometimes our intuition always seems to be running when we are not aware when it is running. I think the profound effect here is that when you are able to catch it and see it with your senses, that gives you a sense of direction you never thought was possible. One of the key elements though I warn is that one should not always listen to their heart in moments of crisis when your heart is talking to you about something; sometimes it’s about giving yourself the pause and reflective moment to see what the heart is suggesting in a moment of despair. I reflect heavily on this notion quite a bit, considering where I came from and the struggles I have had to endure over the last year and a half.
Sometimes when you are in a moment of despair, a moment of reflection, a moment of sadness, a moment of hardness - one should realize that there is an inner voice talking to you. Whether that be God or your actual intuition, that is the key here. Once you find that voice, sit and listen to it; give yourself the patience to hear the voice and what it is telling you. Generally speaking, your body is telling you something that is going wrong. It is amazing what the human body can tell you when you are experiencing some intense feelings of sadness, sorrow, depression or even pain. That is what I had to do back when I was in the hospital, trying to find the right ways of getting back to where I was going before. And honestly, doing this might have changed my life for the better and let me explain why.
My change came when I was in a moment of crisis and in a corner I had no idea how to get out of. That was a lonely feeling, and more often than not, most people will turn to the drastic conclusions. Hence, exactly what I did in those moments because the feelings were so intense I did not know what to do or even how to benefit the situation. And ever since this moment, and ever since getting better at the hospital, making my changes mentally and physically, even going as far as to say I am making habits for the changes I am looking for; life is meant to be adaptive, we are meant to change and endure hard things as humans, and that was the very lesson that I was needing in my life. But little did I know it was my heart telling me in that situation and or in current situations that have happened this year to me.
My intuition is always telling me something about how to approach a situation or even telling me the moral lessons before approaching something that might bring up some ethical questions for oneself. It was telling me that I can leave, it was telling me that I can survive this, it was telling me that going after the goodness or virtue which we naturally seek should be the thing we are searching for in the moment of crisis. That is hope; that is hope working for us in the hearts we are given naturally. Your intuition, your inner voice, your heart is always working for you and it wants you to survive, otherwise you would not be so conflicted when moments of self-deprecation come up.
And I am guilty of that and have been making the drastic change of not being so harsh on myself, especially when the moments of despair that will inevitably come up; you find yourself wanting to be in a better place mentally when the moment of darkness comes up. One will find peace knowing when there are dark times, you can find light in kindness and compassion; which more often than not will be your intuition or heart telling you to find the path towards peace. Moreover, my heart is always telling me to find the positive of the situation; to not be bitter; to not allow negative feelings brew up because someone did you wrong or even a group of friends who abandoned you. When a friend is in need, you show up because that is the inner voice in you, telling you to go and help; to be virtuous and selfless in moments where you can shine the light for someone else.
Our culture today seems to want to not give the light to others unconditionally; that even providing hope in moments of crisis comes with a transactional feeling. This is just beyond wrong that I have no idea how to even explain it; it is human for us to be good to one another. If we are striving for a Christian society, which one can see in the news, one of the popular teachings in Christ’s teachings is: “love thy neighbor”. And what point does your heart tell you to do this exact thing? Instead of staying on your screen, put down the phone and go help; put down the video games and go do something that helps people who are homeless; quit the YouTube video and go do your civil duty of cleaning up trash in the streets.
Your intuition and heart can tell you many things, but the singular thing that should be present when one starts to listen to that voice, to see what moral goodness it is teaching you. It is a lesson deep within your soul and heart that is telling you to be better; to be someone who is good-natured, who is kind and respectful, who is accepting of all things and is showing their curiosity in all situations. Why does our hearts do this? Because it speaks truth and wisdom that many of us tend to ignore, including myself. I did that for such a long time, but now that I have the awareness to listen to “my gut”, it is paying dividends I can hardly express how amazing it feels.
Much like having something too good or too bad, one can’t escape what the body will tell you in those situations. For instance, if one loves energy drinks, it’s most likely a chance where your body can handle a drink here and there; however, if one loves them unconditionally, they will drink energy drinks the whole day recognizing that their heart might beat out of their chest because they consumed too much; they got greedy and did not listen to their heart, quite literally in that example. And that is what is most important here; catch yourself before it gets worse; recognize that it is okay and accept to have things in a balanced nature. Your mind will catch up but your body is a step ahead of it; be sure to always remember when you are experiencing something too good, to say, “what is my heart and or intuition telling me? Am I being too greedy?” Your heart is powerful, but remember not to give it the floor and the final answer right away; it’s a moment of reflection that gives you a chance to pause and say, my mind has caught up now and we can reframe what I am doing to get back to a healthier state of being.
Main thought: Listen to your heart and or intuition; but remember not to give it the final say on what the answer is. Listen, reflect, figure out the next course of action that leads you to a better and healthier state of living again.
